Most developers either work with databases and program; or create graphics and animation. Its almost always two people since one is a very logical left brain process while the other is very artistic right brain function.
I do both. I'm very productive with web programming/databases and also web graphics/animation.
I program in Cold Fusion, ASP and PHP with MS SQL Server or mysql as back end databases, while design and layout are accomplished in Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop.

This is an application I created for the modeling industry, for models and photographers to create their own portfolios and for agencies to easily view them.
The navigation system was designed with an absolute minimalist and user friendly design so that the entire emphasis of the website goes upon the photographs.
Each photograph uploaded gets converted into a thumbnail, medium and full size (full screen) image.

This is a site for a lasik surgery clinic
that has a short but very effective Flash intro with sound.
Within the site all the facility photos are optimized to look as elegant and load as quickly as possible.
The text, photos and hyperlinks can easily be edited via a visual tool in the Exel Admin section.

This is an application I created for real estate agents in San Diego.
It downloads all the data and photos from the MLS boards webserver every night, so that by the morning visitors to a client's website can search every single property available in San Diego county.
The solution also generates reports each day that show the low, high and average price of homes in every city in San Diego sorted by the number of bedrooms.
Realtors can easily edit their website text, photos and hyperlinks.
DREAMWEAVER WEB PAGE DESIGN, LAYOUT AND CODING (by Macromedia)
I do all the website layout and design in Dreamweaver. This program is also developed by Macromedia, and its really the choice of professionals around the world for its extensive set of tools under the surface. It allows a graphical way of laying out pages, but it also saves a great deal of time for programmers who need to get into the code and add custom functions to web pages, to make a website a dynamic application, instead of just an online brochure.
FLASH FOR WEBSITE MOVIES, SOUND AND ANIMATION (by Macromedia)
I develop website animations and advertisements with Flash. Generally speaking I encourage clients not to engage in long Flash movies, because most people just click on SKIP INTRO, and lack the patience to actually watch them. So I encourage you to use Flash within your website to give it life and motion, but sparingly so it complements rather than distracts or annoys your visitors. Flash is a great way to differentiate yourself from the competition and do things that aren't possible with HTML.
COLD FUSION RAPID WEB DEVELOPMENT LANGUAGE (by Macromedia)
There are primarily 3 languages used to turn a website into a functional applications, which are ASP (Microsoft), PHP (open source hence free) and Cold Fusion (Macromedia). I can program in all 3, ASP, Cold Fusion or PHP. However I chose Cold Fusion as the primary tool years ago because it allows you to develop web solutions in virtually half the time and with half the code required by the other languages. Cold Fusion is also used by 75 of the Fortune 100 Companies.
For that reason Cold Fusion is called a RAPID DEPLOYMENT solution, because it allows you to deliver solutions in a much shorter time than any other language. It delivers pages just as fast, if not faster, and it provides the greatest ease for allowing database interaction with Flash & Dreamweaver (since all 3 products are owned by Macromedia). Its also referred to by some developers as HTML on steroids.
Cold Fusion runs on a java engine, and is designed to interact seamlessly with ASP .net, java, jsp and just about every major database to integrate with virtually any back end system. As a result Cold Fusion is supported by a growing network of thousands of developers worldwide, who also develop custom Cold Fusion tags to be used by other programmers to save them time developing the same solutions.
SQL SERVER DATABASE FOR STORING YOUR DATA (by Microsoft)
The 3 most popular databases online are mysql (free), Oracle (expensive) and Microsoft SQL Server (very similar to Oracle). I can use mysql but prefer not to because it doesn't have the same management features built into the higher end database programs. My preference is Microsoft SQL Server since its extremely fast and can handle 33,000 hits on the database at exactly the same moment. So its also very stable. Using SQL Server, we also don't have to worry about backups of your data, its done automatically.
PHOTOSHOP FOR GRAPHICS & PHOTO ENHANCEMENTS (by Adobe)
When it comes to creating graphics or enhancing photographs, Photoshop is the industry leading application and the choice amongst professionals worldwide. I've spent years learning the nuances of this application, and there's virtually little I can't do with it. No matter what type of images you provide, in almost very case I can enhance your photos via some corrections in Photoshop to make them look more compelling once online. Also Photoshop is great for compressing all your graphics and photos so that the file size is much smaller allowing them to load much faster on your website.
